Most of us probably know the true story about Easter. How can we explain the resurrection story to our kids?
The Easter Bunny and Egg hunting are all fun however it does not signify Christ’s ultimate sacrifice for you and me.
Teaching Kids About Easter
Christ’s death and resurrection is such a profound story of God’s redemptive love for mankind; however it is also gory. Not for the faint of heart.
Have you seen passion of the Christ?
We as adults can probably stomach it, but how do we explain it to our kids so they will understand Christ’s ultimate sacrifice?
In this post I will talk about:
What is the true meaning of Easter?
Why teach kids about Easter?
How do we, as parents, explain Easter to our kids?

What Is The True Meaning of Easter?
Christians celebrate Easter not just for the Easter Bunny, Easter baskets, and egg hunting. It’s so much more than that!
It’s because of Jesus Christ’s love for us by dying on the cross for our sins, Our sins, not His.
Romans 5:8 – But God demonstrates His own love for us in this: While we were still sinners, Christ died for us
Jesus Christ was the perfect lamb of God.
However it did not stop there, my friends!
Three days later, He rose from the grave!
Acts 2:24 – But God raised Him from the dead, freeing Him from the agony of death, because it was impossible for death to keep its hold on Him
And this, the sacrifice, the death, the resurrection, our salvation is the true meaning of Easter
Why Teach Kids About Easter?
You could probably leave it up to school (if your child goes to private school) and Sunday school to teach your child about Easter.
But for me, I’d like it reiterated at home that just like Christmas, Easter is just as important.
I want my daughter to know that as much as it’s celebrated at church, it’s also celebrated at home in a personal way.
Because let’s face it, we were all on our way to hell. But because Jesus gave His life for us, we are saved and promised to spend eternity with Him.
John 3:16 – For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have eternal life.
Also, the world throws a lot of flashy Easter merch and candies around (and while that is fine and dandy), it covers up the true meaning of Easter.
So when the school and church teach your kids about the true meaning of Easter, there is nothing better that will help them to remember that than when it is also discussed at home.
How Do We As Parents Teach Easter To Our Kids?
With kids, it is important they understand Christ’s sacrifice by dying on the cross for our sins because that is what Easter is all about.
You can skip the gory details.
For example, my daughter is 6 years old. So my story of Easter would go something like this:
Imagine you did something terribly bad that you did not want mom or dad to know about because you knew you would get in big trouble for it.
But when mom and dad found out that you did that terrible thing and you were about to get punished for it, someone else (like your sibling, cousin or friend) came up and said she’ll take your punishment instead of you.
That is an example of what Jesus did for you and me when He died on the cross.
We are not perfect, we do bad things and we deserve a punishment.
We deserve to go to Hell.
But Jesus…said “I’ll take their punishment so they don’t go to hell and instead spend eternity with me.”
So Jesus took the punishment by dying on the cross for every single one of us to save us from our punishment – HELL
But that wasn’t all…
3 days later, He comes back to life to tell all His friends that what He did is for everyone. And everyone should know to believe in Him (Jesus) so that they will also be saved and not go to hell.
And this is why we celebrate Easter!
Did I miss anything out?
With kids, you have to simplify for them so they understand and as the years go by, you can add a little more detail if you’d like.
Easter Book Recommendations
Books that teach about Easter are also a good idea to read to your kids and maybe have a discussion afterwards of what they think of the story.
Here are a few of my recommendations:
A story about a donkey who is bored and unhappy until he is assigned a very special task
The book is a story of Jesus who takes a stand against the greed and sinfulness of mankind until one of His disciples betrays Him
The Garden, The Curtain, and The Cross
A story of why Jesus’ death and resurrection is good news for us starting all the way back to Adam and Eve
A story of how the first Easter may not have been so quiet!
