Every so often, you may feel the need to bless your home, I know I do. Covering each room in prayer and ask for the Lord to bless each family member as well as the visitors that come through the home. Going through each room and while the room gets cleaned, you can pray over what that room serves and who it’s for.
For example, in the dining room pray for many family meals together, good communication to be had and the ability to entertain guests and be a good representation of Christ.
Blessing Your Home
There have been so many homes (my home included) where I walk in to and feel a certain dark, foreboding energy.
Are you familiar with homes like that? Homes that are not necessarily dark and lacking of sunlight but there is just something unsettling about it.
Growing up and even in my adult life, I would look into my horoscopes, had crystals, and participate in card readings. Little did I know that this opens a door to the demonic realm. Not knowing what the Bible said about these ungodly practices, I thought this was ok.
As I started walking with Christ, I realized that I needed to bless my home. Welcoming Christ and Holy Spirit into my home and rebuke any demonic spirits out of my home changed the atmosphere of my home.
” ‘I tell you the truth, whatever you forbid on earth will be forbidden in heaven, and whatever you permit on earth will be permitted in heaven.'” Matthew 18:18
In this post, I will go through why it is important to bless your home and how to bless your home (where to start).
Why You Should Bless Your Home
Blessing your home is not a requirement to anything. However, what has been found that it clears the air and just reaffirms that your home serves the Lord and that any evil spirits are not welcome in your home.
Blessing your home is a way of protecting your home and those that reside from spiritual danger and attack.
How to Bless Your Home
To bless your home you must start by opening all windows and doors.
I get cold easily so I choose a nice sunny day to do this.
Then grab some anointing oil (for me, this is simply olive oil that I have prayed over and asked the Lord to bless). There is no magic or anything special with this oil, it is just a symbol of what it represents when you place anointing oil in the room.
Start with the rooms in back of the house and work your way towards the front. Go from room to room blessing it and covering the room in prayer. In every room, you can tidy up the room, clean it up, and add a little bit of anointing oil at the doorway and windowsills, making a cross symbol when swiping the anointing oil unto the doorway or windowsill.
What Does Blessing Your Home Accomplish?
It invites the Lord and the Holy Spirit into your home
It provides a welcoming haven and a safe refuge for those entering your home
It removes negative and evil spirits and plans of the enemy away from the lives of you and those around you.
It allows you to pray for you and members of your family specifically.
It allows you to pray for protection, provision, unity, peace and guidance into your home
And most importantly, it allows you to pray for salvation for you and your loved ones
When you first bless your home, it may seem a little awkward especially if you are not used to praying from your heart.
I grew up reciting prayer so I can absolutely relate to not knowing how to pray from your heart and just “winging it”. I had to read a prayer in order to pray at first.
Below are samples of prayers you can say when covering your home in prayer. These are just samples and guidance on how to pray, I encourage you to use this as guidance and to start praying from your heart as you pray more often and letting the Holy Spirit to guide you.
Bedrooms
In the bedrooms, pray over the person who’s bedroom it is. You may also want to personalize these prayers with adding any specific concerns that this particular person is going through.
You can pray for this person’s walk with the Lord, pray for their discernment, pray for peace within themeselves and other, and protection as they walk out the door.
My ex-husband (who I am standing in the gap for) lives with us and I specifically pray for his walk with the Lord. Right now as I am writing this blog, his walk with the Lord is nonexistent. I know the Lord is faithful, so I pray over his pillow every day that his steps will be guided back to the Lord.
Sample prayer:
Heavenly Father, I lift up _________ (whosever bedroom it is) in prayer. I thank you Lord that you a You will never leave nor forsake _________. I pray for their walk in life, Lord, may they always walk close with You and never depart from You. I thank You, Lord, for their health and their safety, please continue to protect ________. I pray that ________ will have a restful sleep, provide them with the peace that can only come from You, Lord. Help them to love You and live in obedience to You, serving You and serving others. In Jesus Name. Amen.
He is patient with you, not wanting anyone to perish but everyone to come to repentence. 2 Peter 3:10.
Scriptures to pray over:
Numbers 6:24-26
The Lord bless you, and keep you; the Lord make his face shine on you and be gracious to you; the Lord turn his face toward you and give you peace.
Proverbs 3:24
When you lie down, you will not be afraid; when you lie down, your sleep will be sweet.
Matthew 11:28-30
Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls.
You can also replace the word “you” to the person’s name to further personalize these scriptures.
Bathrooms
As a child, my mother would take bath time as an opportunity to pray. Every time I take a bath or give my daughter a bath, I am reminded that bath time not only is a time to wash ourselves clean but also to talk about the Lord’s goodness.
The bathroom reminds me of cleanliness and being blessed to not only have indoor plumbing but also electricity.
Here are some key points you can pray for while blessing the bathrooms:
*cleanliness (in outward appearance but also with the mind, in speech and in action), cleaning you of your sins
*the Lord providing necessities for you and your family
*your finances that can support basic necessity such as running water, electricity, etc.
Sample prayer:
Lord, I thank you for providing us with clean running water and sanitary conditions. I thank you for cleansing us of our sins. May we never take for granted how blessed we are to know You and to have access to stay clean. Thank you Lord. In Jesus name.
Sciptures to pray:
Psalms 51:7
Cleanse me with hyssop, and I will be clean; wash me, and I will be whiter than snow.
1 John 1:7
But if we walk in the light, as he is in the light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus, his Son, purifies us from all sin.
Ezekiel 36:25
I will sprinkle clean water on you, and you will be clean; I will cleanse you from all your impurities and from all your idols.
Toy Room
The last place that always seems to be a mess is the toy room.
My child has a toy room. It’s always a mess. Whenever she gets a new toy(s), it’s a prompt to purge through her toy room and either sell or give away old toys to make room for new ones. This has always been a challenge but something that is necessary. I’m trying to instill in her a heart to give and not to take, a heart to share and not to withhold.
Sample Prayer:
Lord, thank you for this space to house my child(ren)’s toys. I pray, Lord, that my child(ren) will always know to live in abundance of love, of peace, of resources because You are our provider. May my child(ren) never take what You have blessed them with for granted. May my child(ren) be reminded to be grateful. Thank you Lord that we have this space to be together and play with our child(ren). Help us to never put anything else above You including stuff. May we as parents never take our child(ren) for granted as our kids are a gift from You. May my child(ren) keep this room clean and tidy. In Jesus Name. Amen.
Scriptures to pray:
Psalm 127:3
Children are a gift from the Lord; they are a reward from Him.
Matthew 19:14
Jesus said “Let the little children come to me, and do not hinder them, for the kingdom of heaven belongs to such as these”.
3 John 1:4
I have no greater joy than to hear that my children
Home Office
I am so thankful the Lord has already provided for my family and I one way or another. Even when I was not faithful in my tithing or not tithing at all, He was still faithful to provide. When my husband did not have a job and we did not know how we were going to make ends meet, He still made a way. I haven’t always appreciated my job, it hasn’t always been enjoyable; however, I am more appreciative of it now knowing to do things as if I were working for Him and not man.
Do you love your job/career? If not, are there things that you can focus on that you are thankful that God has continued to provide?
Sample Prayer
Lord, thank you for providing my family and I financially. Thank you, Lord, that I have the ability to work and do my job well. I pray Lord that every task I do, I can be reminded to do it wholeheartedly and do it as unto the Lord. Help us to always honor You with our first fruits and tithe first before paying our bills or spending. In Jesus Name. Amen
Scriptures to pray:
Colossians 3:23
Work willingly at whatever you do, as though you were working for the Lord rather than for people.
Matthew 6:24
No one can serve two masters. For you will hate one and love the other; you will be devoted to one and despise the other. You cannot serve God and be enslaved to money.
Psalm 90:17
And may the Lord our God show us his approval and make our efforts successful. Yes, make our efforts successful!
Kitchen
In the kitchen, focus on praying over provisions that the Lord has provided for you. You can also pray over everyone’s health, delicious food and being able to provide for others or having the opportunity to do so.
In my early adulthood, I hated cooking. Cooking is still not my favorite past time. Throughout the years, I have learned how to cook to produce delicious meals (not my opinion but my family’s). I am so grateful for the Lord’s provision. I don’t worry about running out of food but from what the recent pandemic taught me, we also must plan ahead.
Sample Prayer
Lord, thank You for providing us with tools to prepare delicious meals for my family. We pray for our daily bread. Thank you, Lord that we never have to worry about whether or not we will eat but instead You have provided us with choices. We pray Lord that You are also blessing others and You are also feeding them both physically as well as spiritually. Give us hearts to help and serve others. In Jesus Name. Amen.
Scriptures to pray:
Ecclesiastes 9:7
So go ahead. Eat your food with joy, and drink your wine with a happy heart, for God approves of this!
Isaiah 1:19
If you will only obey me, you will have plenty to eat.
John 6:35
Then Jesus declared, “I am the bread of life. Whoever comes to me will never go hungry, and whoever believes in me will never be thirsty.”
Living Room/Family Room
A living room or family room is always a great place to gather around and spend time together either to watch movies, play board games or just to have conversation. This place is a space to get together so pray over togetherness, peace amongst each other. You may want to pray for good conversations and activities that please God. You may also want to pray for guarding you and your family’s heart of any wickedness.
Sample Prayer
Lord, I pray over this room that it may serve as a gathering place for family and friends. I pray Lord that we will always have great godly people around us to encourage and build us up as well as correct us if we stray on the wrong path. May we always watch and do things that are only pleasing to You, Lord. Keep us from temptation and protect us all from evil. May we direct our steps be directed according to Your Will and Way for our lives. In Jesus Name, Amen.
Scriptures to pray:
Hebrews 10:24-25
And let us consider how we may spur one anotehr on toward love and good deeds, not giving up meeting together, as some are in the habit of doing, but encouraging one another – and all the more as you see the day approaching.
Matthew 18:20
“‘For where two or three gather in my name, there am I with them.'”
Psalm 119:133
Direct my footsteps according to your word; let no sin rule over me.
Dining Room
The dining room is also a place to gather and spend time together. This is a place to break bread or share meals with others. This may also be a place to have good honest conversation, pray for peace and unity in the home and while entertaining.
Sample Prayer
Lord, thank you for this space that we can gather together as a family and also with our friends. May our conversations and time together be honoring and pleasing to You. Guide our conversation as we gather together. Thank you Lord that we have food on our table that we can enjoy and replenish our bodies and share with others. In Jesus Name. Amen.
Scriptures to pray:
Romans 12:13
Share with the Lord’s people who are in need. Practice hospitality.
Titus 1:8
Rather, he must be hospitable, one who loves what is good, who is self-controlled, upright, holy, and disciplined.
1 Peter 4:8
Above all, love each other deeply, because love covers a multitude of sins
Blessing your home may feel awkward at first but once you regularly pray over your home, it becomes pretty natural and you won’t need a guide – the prayers will just flow from your heart.
Remember when blessing your home, the main goal is to welcome Jesus into your home and in your life and to rebuke all evil out.
James 4: 7
Submit yourselves therefore to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you.
This blog post is all about blessing your home.
