Let’s face it, having oily skin is not is not ideal when you want your makeup to stay on all day. Makeup on oily skin has been known to run especially when the whether is hot and humid. Here are some tried and true tips that have worked to keep my makeup lasting longer.
Long Lasting Makeup Tips for Oily Skin
Skincare
I used to think that I did not need to moisturize since I had enough oil in my skin and so why would I want to add more grease to my face? Boy! Was I wrong. In fact, my pores created more sebum to makeup for the lack of moisture in my face.
Good skincare is where to start when you’ve got oily skin. Washing your face and keeping it clean keeps the overproduction of sebum at bay. As well as using an oily free moisturizer and exfoliating regularly.
Primer
Primers are used to prime and smooth out pores, creating a smooth and even base before applying foundation. Primers can help absorb oils and minimize shine in oil proned skin. Choosing the right primer can keep your makeup lasting all day. Choose ones that are “oil free” and choose a few to compare. What works for one, may not work for another.
Here are some primers to try:
Hourglass Veil Mineral Primer $22
Neutrogena Shine Control Primer $14.19
Benefit Cosmetic The Porefessional $13
Setting Spray
Setting Sprays can help lock in makeup after application to help keep the makeup in place and lasting longer. The important thing to consider when using a setting spray with oily skin is one that can absorb excess oils and prevents skin from looking greasy.
Charlotte Tilbury Airbrush Flawless Setting Spray $21 (my all time favorite)
NYX Professional Makeup Matte Finish Makeup Setting Spray $9.50
Urban Decay All Nighter Long Lasting Makeup Setting Spray $33
Apply Makeup in Light Layers
Less is more especially when it comes to oily skin. The least amount of layers of makeup on your face the better. This helps to combat the excess oil that your skin produces throughout the day. Your skin needs to be able to breathe throughout the day and many layers of makeup will only clog your pores and lead to breakout.
On a sidenote – this is one of the reasons why I love cream makeup because you can apply one layer of makeup including highlight, contour, blush and blend it all together. Cream makeup is very easy to blend.
Which takes me to my next tip which will completely contradict this previous statement:
Choose the Right Kind of Makeup
There is a multitude of makeup to choose from. It can be quite daunting to picking what is best for your skin. From budget to luxury, to “clean”, to liquid/cream/powder foundation. The choices are endless.
Choosing the right kind of makeup that is right for you will not only keep the oils at bay but will also help keep your makeup staying longer.
One thing to consider is liquid vs cream vs powder.
Liquid foundation – usually has a sheer coverage that dries to a powdery finish.
Cream foundation – sits on top of your skin, has a medium to full coverage and stays in a cream consistency
Powder foundation – finely milled and highly pigmented.
For oily skin, it is best to stick to liquid or powder foundation.
Use Setting Powders
Lastly, use setting powders after applying your makeup to prevent makeup from creasing and melting during the day.
The best setting powders are the ones that are finely milled.
Here are some of my favorites:
Laura Mercier Translucent Loose Setting Powder – $40
Coty Airspun Loose Face Powder – $5.43
Hourglass Veil Translucent Setting Powder $46
