Now more than ever, marriages and families are being attacked by the enemy – Satan. You don’t see the attack in the natural, physical realm at first. The battle starts in the spiritual realm which means you will have to start battling in prayer.
Unfortunately, I learned about being a prayer warrior and the importance of interceding for your family after my husband left. This does not mean it’s too late. It’s never too late with God.
I want to share the importance of being a prayer warrior and warring for your spouse and family early on. The battle starts on your knees in prayer.
Anyone can be a prayer warrior but not everyone answers that calling to intercede for others, let alone their husband and family. It’s every married Christian woman and Christian mother’s calling to be a prayer warrior for themselves and their families. Whether you answer to that calling is up to you. We must fight in spiritual battle for what God has blessed us with – our first ministry being our marriage and our second ministry being our children.
In this post, I will discuss what is a prayer warrior and why it is fundamentally important to be a prayer warrior for your family.
Prayer Warriors Needed | 13 Reasons Why You Should Be a Prayer Warrior for Your Family
First, we must dissect what a prayer warrior is in order for you to understand why these women (and men) of God are so important.
What is a Prayer Warrior?
Simply put, a prayer warrior is someone who chooses to fight and intercede in personal and spiritual battles through prayer.
God calls all believers to pray and war in the spiritual realm.
In Ephesians 6:12 it states, “For we are not fighting against flesh-and-blood enemies, but against evil rulers and authorities of the unseen world, against mighty powers in this dark world, and against evil spirits in the heavenly places.”
A child of God prays and spends time with the Lord. However, a Prayer Warrior has a much more deeper calling and answers to the calling to intercede for others. A prayer warrior is someone who is committed to pray for individuals, groups, situations, events. Prayer Warriors war against the forces of evil on our knees before God.
We must understand that the battle is on our knees in prayer before God and that the Lord can do so much more with our prayers in the physical realm than we (as humans) can ever do on our own strength. We must recognize that our real enemy is Satan and not anyone in this earth.
Why Be a Prayer Warrior for Your Family?
“Be alert and of sober mind. Your enemy the devil prowls around like a roaring lion looking for someone to devour.” 1 Peter 5:8
We have an adversary, Satan, who is always looking to put division between you, your spouse and your family.
Luckily, we have someone more powerful on our side – Jesus Christ who not only will fight for us but He has also died for us.
There are certain aspects of you and your family’s lives that you should regularly pray over as your family’s prayer warrior
1)Prayer is communicating
Prayer is a way for us to communicate with God. It’s a way for us to give our needs and burdens to the Lord, the One who is in control of any situation
1 John 5:15 “And if we know that He hears us – whatever we ask – we know that we have what we asked of Him.”
2) There is no one who can pray for your family like you can
The Lord has entrusted you with your husband and your children. There is no one better equipped and more capable to intercede for your family members than you.
You may say:
“I don’t know how to pray.”
“I don’t have a prayer life.”
“I don’t have a relationship with God.”
What I will tell you is that God meets you where you are, if you are willing. Every prayer warrior started somewhere.
Trust me, from someone who came from a Catholic background and just recited prayers – praying from my heart was difficult. Over time, it has gotten easier. So if I can do it, so can you!
3) We are at a spiritual battle
Whether you see it or not, the enemy is always at work to steal, kill and destroy.
If you don’t see anything bad happening in the natural world – then be prepared and start praying and interceding for your family now to avoid any works of the enemy.
Armor up!
Gird up your loins and start armoring you and your family up.
As Priscilla Shirer says “we are either going through a storm, coming out of a storm, or walking into a storm”.
You do not want to be caught off guard when the enemy attacks. You want to be ready! So make sure you start practicing having a strong prayer life for anything that might be thrown your way.
4)The Lord provides peace
I don’t know about you but now more than ever, I’m hearing lots of talk about “anxiety” especially post covid.
I’m not discrediting this disorder; however, I wonder if going to God in prayer would help, reduce or completely eradicate someone’s anxiety disorder.
He promises to give us peace when we go to Him.
Philippians 4:6-7 “Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.
He not only covers peace over your mind but also covers peace over your home, over your marriage, over your workplace.
5) Pray over your spouse’s faith and their relationship with the Lord
Your marriage has 3 people in it: you, your spouse and God. God being in the center of your marriage. The further away you or your husband is away from God. The further you two are as a couple as well.
Picture an isosceles triangle (a triangle having 3 equal sides) with God being on the top of that triangle, you and your spouse at the two bottom corners. As the two bottom corners of the triangle moves further from the top, the two bottom corners also move away from each other. Vice versa, as the two bottom corners move closer to the top (moving closer to God), they also move closer to each other.
You are your husband’s helpmeet meaning you are to help your husband in his life especially to support his relationship with the Lord.
When your husband is in the right standing with God, you can stand together and war together against the enemy.
6) Pray for your marriage
Even if your marriage is strong and everything is going great, the enemy will always try to find a way to infiltrate and get in between you and your spouse.
Pray for blessings, strength and protection over your marriage.
Pray for unity between you and your spouse and always place God in the center of it all.
7) Pray over your children’s faith
One of the greatest things you can do as a Christian parent is to show your children in the way to pray from their hearts.
Pray out loud.
Pray when they are around.
I like to pray in the car on the way to school and I invite my daughter to pray as well.
Pray that the Lord will bring people to them during their Christian walk that will help uphold them in life and in their faith.
8) For your family’s physical protection
We can’t always be with our husband’s and kids 24/7. However, I am so glad to tell you that I know someone who will never leave them nor forsake them.
It feels like now more than ever, there are so many shootings that it’s hard to keep up with. However I know Someone who fights my battles for me and not only for me but also for my family members.
Deuteronomy 3:22 states “Do not be afraid of them; the Lord your God himself will fight for you.”
Pray in the morning on your way to take your kids to school and lift up all your family members. Lift up every single one of them, one by one, and cover them in prayer. Also add anything extra that they may be having a difficult time with or what you feel in your heart your family members would need extra prayers over.
I can trust that no matter what happens, the Lord will be with my kids at school. I have already invited Him into their days.
9) Pray for you and your family’s health
Money can’t buy you good health.
If Covid has taught us anything, one of them would be this – the importance of good health and having God’s covering from illnesses and diseases.
How easily we may have taken health for granted.
Praying that the Lord protects those closest to you from illness or injuries is important.
10)Pray for your finances
Ask the Lord to always cover you and your family’s needs. Pray that you will never be without.
I will say that the Lord also wants you to be financially responsible and not just keep spending on frivolous things. Being a spender most of my life, this has been very challenging for me; however, even when I was at the peak of debt, on maternity leave, and started tithing 10% of whatever came into my bank account – the Lord has been faithful to cover our bills, put food on our table, to keep our house standing.
He’s so good!
11) Give thanks
This should actually be on the top of the list.
But don’t forget to thank the Lord for His faithfulness, goodness and mercy.
Thank Him for never leaving you and your family through difficult situations and always seeing you through them.
Thank Him for always providing you and your family.
12) Cover Yourself in Prayer
I always forget to pray over me. I don’t know about you.
Not like I can’t do without prayers (because I certainly need them) over myself but after I’ve prayed over every single one of my family members, I just become an after thought to myself.
Cover whatever is in your heart to pray over yourself.
13)Ask For Prayer
Ask for prayer from other prayer warriors.
Pray for their families, their needs and these fellow prayer warriors can also pray for your family and your needs.
If you can, have a prayer group of other Christian women going where you are praying together for each of your families.
Matthew 18:19 “For where 2 or 3 are gathered together in my name, there am I in the midst of them.”
Like I said, prayer is powerful and there is strength in numbers.
Don’t forget, prayer is also a conversation to the Lord and to pour out your heart, your worries and your joys to Him.
There is so many things the enemy can throw at you with thoughts to use against others. Combat those thoughts with prayers.
In short, you can never run out of things to pray for especially for your family. Whether it be a test coming up, a job interview, or an illness, there is nothing like the kind of peace the Lord gives when you have trusted those He trusted you with in His hands.
This is what being a prayer warrior for your family is all about.
